India’s automotive industry has been reaching new heights every financial year with its great number of produced and sold units day by day. The industry crossed the 3-million mark for this year in a row, with monthly sales surpassing 3,00,000 units as many as nine times. Unsurprisingly, Maruti Suzuki continued to dominate the list of Top 10 most cars sold in FY2023 with seven models, while Tata Motors and Hyundai also made appearances. Here’s a detailed look at the 10 best selling cars in FY2023 across all segments.
1. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
The practical urban runabout retains its title as India’s best selling car for the second year now with a total of 2,12,340 units sold till now. The easy-to-live-with Wagon R Hatchback is great value for money and also has the option of a peppy 1.2-litre engine. An AMT option on both engines (1.0-litre and 1.2-litre) adds to the convenience factor, while the 1.0-litre CNG version helps ease out running costs.
2. Maruti Suzuki Baleno
India witnesses a triumph as the Baleno, its best selling premium hatchback, crosses 2,02,901 units, showcasing an impressive 37 percent growth from FY2022’s 1,48,187. Notable features comprise a spacious cabin, upgraded safety elements, trendy gadgets in higher-spec variants, and a design tailored for urban living. The new CNG variant contributes to increased sales.
3. Maruti Suzuki Alto
Defying the shift towards SUVs, the small hatchback posts a notable 24 percent growth (FY2022: 1,45,167). The introduction of the third-generation Alto K10, with a new CNG variant in November 2022, amplifies its attractiveness. Keep in mind that this growth figure includes the now-obsolete Alto 800.
4. Maruti Suzuki Swift
The Swift impresses with a commendable 5.40 percent growth from FY2022, reaching 1,67,827 units to 1,76,902 units in FY2023. Despite this achievement, it slips from second to fourth place this year. Boasting a chic design, a tidy cabin, and an efficient 90 hp petrol engine, the third-gen Swift falls short on nimble dynamics. However, it compensates with convenient AMTs and the option of a factory-fitted CNG kit for added versatility.
5. Tata Nexon
With an impressive lineup of 69 variants, including 47 petrol, 10 diesel, and 12 electric models, the Tata Nexon is setting the pace in the automotive market by selling 1,72,138 units in FY 2023. Boasting both automatic and manual transmission choices, this SUV has become a sensation. Surging ahead, it secured the top spot as India’s best selling SUV in FY2023, marking a remarkable 39 percent growth compared to FY2022’s sales of 1,24,130 units. Holding steady, the Nexon maintains its fifth rank from the previous year.
6. Hyundai Creta
The Creta, a feature-rich midsize SUV, soared in popularity with five engine-gearbox choices. Its impressive sales surged by 27 percent, reaching 1,50,372 in FY2023. Notably, it played a pivotal role in Hyundai Motor India’s record-breaking fiscal sales, contributing 27 percent to the total of 5,67,546 passenger vehicles. Excitingly, an India-bound mid-lifecycle facelift for the Creta is on the horizon.
7. Maruti Suzuki Brezza
In September 2022, the Brezza achieved a milestone, surpassing 8,00,000 unit sales, marking 79 months since its launch. Despite this success, it ranks as the third best selling SUV in India, trailing behind the Nexon and Creta. Featuring a 1.2-liter engine, the Brezza is available in both manual and automatic versions. Notably, it made history as the first compact SUV to offer a CNG variant. Sales for FY2023 witnessed a substantial 28 percent increase with 1,45,665 units sold compared to FY2022, reaching 1,13,751 units.
8. Tata Punch
Tata Motors’ Punch, a rising star in the sub-compact SUV category, secures a spot in India’s Top 10 Passenger Vehicle list. Impressive FY2023 wholesales show a robust 153% year-over-year growth of 52,716 in FY2022 to 1,33,819 in FY 2023. Anticipating continued success, the Punch is set to introduce a CNG version. Its distinguished 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP further solidifies its position as Tata Motors’ second bestseller, trailing only the Nexon.
9. Maruti Suzuki Eeco
For the fourth consecutive year, the Eeco maintains its Top 10 status with several 1,31,191 units sold in FY2023, a testament to its utilitarian design and cost-efficient appeal. The vehicle’s ability to comfortably transport over five individuals and their luggage continues to attract buyers. The Eeco is equipped with a 73hp, 1.2-liter petrol engine, optionally available in CNG. Notably, there is no AMT variant. FY2023 sales surged by 21 percent, reaching 1,08,345 units, outpacing the previous fiscal year.
10. Maruti Suzuki Dzire

The Dzire stands out as India’s favorite sedan, boasting class-leading cabin space, features, and a well-proportioned design. The peace of mind associated with buying a Maruti has contributed to the car’s popularity. It shares its powertrain with the Swift hatchback. A total of 1,20,948 units have been sold in FY2023 till now of Suzuki Dzire.
