Built during the 20th century, the Gateway of India is an arch monument located in Mumbai, India. The monument was constructed to commemorate the landing of Queen Mary and King George V at Apollo Bunder in 1911, during their visit to India.

The Gateway of India was built in Indo-Saracenic style and its foundation stone was laid on 31 March 1911. The monument is an arch structure made of basalt, with a height of 26 m or 85 ft. Post the construction of the monument in 1924, the Gateway was used as a symbolic and ceremonial entrance to India, mainly for the new Governors of Mumbai and Viceroys. It became the entry and access point to India.

The Gateway of India is situated on the waterfront at Apollo Bunder area, along the Chhatrapati Shivaji Marg in South Mumbai. Today, it is one of the city’s top tourist attractions, which is visited by numerous visitors every day.

 

Architecture

The structural layout of the Gateway of India constitutes, a 26 m high arch made of yellow basalt and indissoluble concrete. Built in the Indo-Saracenic style, the monument also has traces of Muslim architecture and it boasts an intricate latticework. Its central dome is 83 ft high with a diameter of 48 ft. The four turrets are the prominent features of the structure of the Gateway of India. Steps are constructed behind the arch of the Gateway, which leads to the Arabian Sea.

Visiting Hours

The Gateway of India can be visited at any time of the day. However, the best time to visit the monument is during the period of November to March, as the climate at this time is extremely pleasant.
